A community petition to honor Sara Martinez Rodriguez — a builder, mentor, and friend to West Philadelphia — with an honorary street designation.
To the Philadelphia City Council
We, the undersigned residents, neighbors, and members of the West Philadelphia community, respectfully petition the Philadelphia City Council to designate the corner of 62nd Street and Girard Avenue as the honorary “Sara's Way,” in loving memory of Sara Martinez Rodriguez.
Our request: That City Council pass the legislation needed to install an honorary street sign reading “Sara's Way” at the corner of 62nd Street and Girard Avenue. This designation honors Sara's memory without changing any resident's mailing address.
Why Sara deserves this honor
Sara Martinez Rodriguez was a builder, a mentor, and a friend to everyone she met. She was the first person in her family to own her own business — a transportation company that helped her neighbors get where they needed to go, day in and day out. What started as a way to earn a living became a way to serve the community she loved.
She had a gift for ideas. Her business mind helped shape some of the best plans and projects in the neighborhood, and she shared that knowledge freely, mentoring others and lifting people up rather than keeping her success to herself. She was generous in a way few people are: she always seemed to have a bed for someone in need and a door that stayed open.
Sara treated every person with consideration and care, always looking out for their best interests. Whatever challenge life put in front of her, she met it with full commitment. Naming this corner “Sara's Way” would give her family, friends, and neighbors a lasting place to remember everything she gave to West Philadelphia.

My name is Celestine Marks I am that Founder and Director of The West Philadelphia Conestoga Angels Marching Corp. I met Sara in the early 1990s as she was passing by driving a school bus. I stop her and required information about my possibly driving my driving my group to our performance, she automatically said yes. After that Sara became a part of our group. Besides her being our driver she became apart of helping us in many ways all the children and my parents loved her.

Ms. Sara was the nicest person that I have ever known! She basically adopted me as her grandchild. She seen that I wasn’t being cared for properly, and took me under her wing. She would feed me and buy me clothes when she knew I was in need. She also would do my hair almost weekly. She treated me like I was family, because she knew I needed one. I really feel like Heaven gained an Angel because she was truly an Angel on earth. She was such a good person and deserves recognition from everyone.
